About the Scottish Personal Licence Course

Under the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005, you are required to have a personal licence if you plan to sell alcohol or authorise others to do so on your behalf in Scotland.

To apply for a Personal Licence, you must first complete this online Scottish Certificate for Personal Licence Holders at SCQF Level 6, also known as the Personal Alcohol Licence or SCPLH course.

Our SCPLH course covers key topics such as the roles of a Personal Licence Holder, Licensing Standards Officer, and the Licensing Board. The course teaches managing alcohol-related crime, conflict resolution, dealing with intoxicated customers, and legal obligations such as protecting children and adhering to health and safety regulations. It prepares participants for the required exam to obtain their licence.

How Does it Work?

After booking with us, you’ll automatically receive login details for the online course and can start right away. The course takes about 4-5 hours and has a 12-month completion window. After finishing the course, we’ll schedule your online exam, which you can take from home or work. Plenty of resources are provided to help you study, and once you pass, we’ll send your certificate soon after.

Approved and recognised by all local licensing boards in Scotland, this is the official qualification required for those applying for a Personal Licence to serve or sell alcohol.

Where Can I Work with a Personal Licence?

A Personal Licence Holder can work in any place that sells alcohol, such as:

  • Bars and Pubs

Frequently Asked Questions

If you plan to sell alcohol in Scotland, you need to apply for a personal licence, and to apply for one, you must first complete the personal licence course.

The Personal licence exam is quite simple. It’s a multiple-choice format, so you just select the right answer from four choices. To pass, you need to get 28 out of 40 correct. We provide mock exams to support your preparation, and if you don't succeed the first time, you can always retake it.

No, the SCPLH certificate is valid only in Scotland. If you want to sell or serve alcohol in England or Wales, you must complete the Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders course.

A personal licence issued in Scotland is valid for 10 years. After this period, you will need to apply for a renewal to continue selling or authorising the sale of alcohol.

The personal licence costs £50, payable to your local licensing board. This fee doesn’t cover the DBS check, which is £25 and must be included with your application.

All venues must appoint a designated premises manager (DPM) who is responsible for overseeing the proper management of alcohol sales. The DPM must hold a personal licence but is not required to be on the premises at all times.
