What is the Door Supervisor Licence?

The Door Supervisor Licence is issued by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) and allows the holder to work in the private security industry in a variety of roles.

With an SIA Door Supervisor Licence, you can work in various places, including pubs, bars, shops, and more. The Door Supervisor Licence proves that holders have the qualifications and skills to work legally in these places as door supervisors.

As a door supervisor, your main job is to ensure people's safety in these places and to protect private property against damage, theft, unauthorised access or disorderly behaviour.

Remember, working in front-line roles without an SIA Licence is illegal in the UK.

Do I Need an SIA Door Supervisor Licence?

Yes, you need a Door Supervisor Licence if you’re performing the licensable activities of a Door Supervisor and your job role involves taking care of public and private property. As it’s illegal to perform these duties without having an SIA licence, you require it by law.

Note: It’s illegal in the United Kingdom to undertake licensable activities without having an SIA licence. However, in some cases, if your employer has an exemption under Section 4(4) of the Private Security Industry Act 2001, you can still work without an SIA licence.

Step 2: Complete the licence application

Please go to the SIA website and complete an online application form to apply for your SIA licence. Provide complete information, including personal details, qualifications, and employment history. Within 25 working days, SIA will contact you.

Step 3: Complete identity checks

After completing the form, you must visit the nearest Post Office to complete your identity checks. You can find your nearest branch here. Please take along your SIA application reference number and the original copies of your documents.

When you visit the Post Office, they'll authenticate your documents, capture your electronic signature, and take your photo. Once the identity verification process is complete, they will dispatch all necessary materials to the SIA on your behalf.

Step 4: Wait for the SIA to complete identity and criminal background checks

SIA takes some time to perform identity checks and conduct a comprehensive background check, including a review of your criminal history. Occasionally, for applicants who have lived in another country for more than six months, there may be a need for additional documentation.

Step 5: Receive your 3-year licence in the post

Upon the approval of your SIA licence application, you will get an SIA Door Supervisor Licence that remains valid for 3 years.
