Eligibility

To be eligible to get a Forklift Licence, you must:

  • be 17 years old or more,
  • have the skills required to drive a car.

 

Forklift Training

To get a Forklift Licence, you must complete a forklift training course. Generally, a forklift training course covers the following topics:

  • Lift truck controls and instruments
  • On/off ramp driving
  • The operators’ safety code
  • Starting/moving/stopping and steering the truck
  • Stacking and destacking
  • Vehicle loading and unloading
  • Operation of hydraulic controls
  • Lift truck stability

 

What is the Difference Between a Forklift Certificate and a Forklift Licence?

Upon completing the forklift training course, you will receive a Certificate. You can show this certificate to your employer to get a job as a forklift operator. However, it’s often called a Licence, but in actuality, it’s a certificate.

 

How Much Does a Forklift Training Course Cost?

The cost of forklift training depends on the training provider you choose. Typically, it costs you around £200 to £700.

 

Can I Drive a Forklift without a Licence?

Yes, you can operate a forklift without a licence but only during training. If you’re not taking any training, you cannot drive a forklift.

 

How Long Will My Forklift Licence Last?

As there’s no Forklift Licence in real, there’s no expiry for it. However, it’s highly recommended to take refresher training every 3 years for optimal safety and proficiency.

If your SIA licence application gets denied, you have the right to make an appeal to SIA. You can visit the SIA official website for details on initiating an appeal.

Typically, SIA takes approximately 25 working days to process a Forklift Licence application. In rare cases, SIA could take up to six weeks to carry out identity checks or criminal records.

The SIA Forklift Licence makes you eligible for roles such as a Forklift Driver, Lift Operator, Warehouse Operator, General Labor Forklift Operator, Reach Truck Operator, and more.

During the SIA application process, SIA conducts a criminal background check through a DBS check and verifies the applicant’s identity.

License Integration means using your current SIA license in a different area. For example, having a SIA Close Protection Licence makes you eligible to become a Door Supervisor.

If you have a criminal record in the past, you won’t be automatically disqualified from getting an SIA licence. However, it has an impact that depends on the nature and severity of the offence. As each case is assessed individually, you must check with the SIA directly or seek legal advice.
