Understanding the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)
The First Aid at Work Refresher (FAW Requalification) is a 2-day course designed for anyone whose current FAW certificate is approaching its expiry date. By attending the First Aid at Work Refresher course in Walthamstow, you can renew your Level 3 First Aid at Work qualification for a further three years.
Rather than repeating the full three-day programme, the refresher is centred on revisiting key knowledge and practising the core practical skills with support from an assessor. This helps you stay aligned with current Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance and workplace expectations.
✅ This refresher is suitable if your FAW certificate is still in date, or if it has only recently lapsed within the usual grace window (commonly up to 28 days).
Eligibility & When to Book
This 2-day First Aid at Work Refresher is designed for learners who already have a First Aid at Work (FAW) certificate. To keep your qualification continuous, it’s best to secure your place before your current certificate reaches its expiry date — otherwise you may need to complete the full 3-day FAW course again.
If your certificate has already expired, you can usually still attend within the standard grace period (typically up to 28 days). Once you are outside that window, the refresher route is no longer valid, and the full FAW programme becomes the required option.
Please bring evidence of your current (or recently expired) FAW certificate on day one, as proof of eligibility is checked at the start of training.
What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?
On the First Aid at Work Requalification in Walthamstow, you’ll revisit the full FAW syllabus to ensure your knowledge remains current and your certification stays valid. Across two days, the focus is on hands-on practice and building confidence in the core skills expected of workplace first aiders.
- Roles, responsibilities, and safe first aid practice (including infection prevention)
- Approaching an incident safely and carrying out primary and secondary assessments
- CPR for adults, including AED use and practical drills
- Placing a casualty in the recovery position and responding to seizures
- Managing choking and controlling serious bleeding
- Recognising and treating shock, as well as burns, scalds, and common minor injuries
- Handling suspected fractures and injuries affecting the head, spine, chest, or limbs
- Providing first aid for eye injuries and suspected poisoning
- Identifying anaphylaxis and using an auto-injector correctly
- Responding to medical emergencies such as heart attack, stroke, asthma, epilepsy, and diabetes
Assessment & Certification
Your First Aid at Work Refresher is evaluated using practical skill demonstrations, continuous trainer observation, and a short multiple-choice test. This approach confirms you can apply what you’ve revised in realistic workplace situations.
After successful completion, you’ll be issued a renewed Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate. It remains valid for a further three years and is recognised in line with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance.
Annual Refresher vs This 2-Day FAW Requalification
Many people assume the annual refresher and the FAW Requalification are the same thing, but they serve different purposes. An annual refresher is a brief skills top-up that helps first aiders stay confident with practical techniques during the year; however, it does not extend or renew your FAW certificate.
To officially renew an expiring qualification, you must take the 2-day First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification). Completing this course is the recognised route to renew your First Aid at Work certificate for a further three-year period.
Who Is the Course For?
This 2-day FAW Refresher is intended for workplace first aiders who already hold the full First Aid at Work qualification and need to keep it current. It suits organisations where incidents are more likely or more complex – including construction and engineering environments, busy warehouses and manufacturing sites, and larger office settings – helping you remain compliant with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) expectations.
