What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?

The First Aid at Work (FAW) Refresher, also referred to as the FAW Requalification, is a 2-day training course designed for individuals whose FAW certificate is nearing expiry. By completing this refresher course in Elgin, you’ll extend your Level 3 FAW qualification for another three years.

Unlike the comprehensive three-day FAW course, the refresher focuses on revisiting core knowledge and provides hands-on practice under the supervision of a certified assessor. This ensures you stay fully compliant with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) regulations.

✅ This course is available to those holding a valid FAW certificate or those within the short grace period following its expiry (usually up to 28 days).

Eligibility & When to Book

This 2-day First Aid at Work requalification course is available to individuals who already possess a valid FAW certificate. It's advisable to book your spot ahead of your current qualification’s expiration to avoid the need to complete the full three-day FAW course.

A grace period of 28 days after the certificate expires allows you to take the refresher. However, if the certificate is lapsed for more than 28 days, you will need to complete the full First Aid at Work course again.

On the first day of training, you will be required to present proof of your existing or recently expired FAW certificate.

What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?

During the FAW Requalification course in Elgin, you will revisit the complete First Aid at Work syllabus, ensuring that your knowledge remains current and your qualification stays valid. Over the course of two days, you’ll focus on the following essential first aid skills that every workplace first aider should be proficient in:

  • Understanding the duties of a first aider and effective infection control measures
  • Assessing the scene and evaluating casualties
  • Practising Adult CPR and using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Managing the recovery position and handling seizures
  • Responding to choking incidents and controlling severe bleeding
  • Providing first aid for shock, burns, scalds, and treating minor injuries
  • Managing fractures and injuries to the head, spine, and chest
  • Administering first aid for eye injuries and suspected poisoning
  • Recognising and treating anaphylaxis using auto-injectors
  • Responding to medical emergencies like heart attacks, strokes, epilepsy, asthma, and diabetes

Assessment & Certification

The FAW Refresher course in Elgin is assessed through a combination of practical demonstrations, trainer observation, and a brief multiple-choice examination. This assessment ensures that you can confidently apply the skills and knowledge refreshed during the course.

Upon successful completion, you will receive an updated Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate, valid for an additional three years and fully accredited by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Annual Refresher vs This 2-Day FAW Requalification

It’s easy to confuse the annual refresher with the First Aid at Work Requalification. The annual refresher is a brief course designed to help you maintain your skills and stay sharp throughout the year. However, it does not renew your certificate.

When your certificate is about to expire, you will need to complete the 2-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) course. This course is the only official way to extend your First Aid at Work qualification for another three years.

Who Is the Course For?

This 2-day FAW Refresher course is tailored for designated first aiders working in environments where workplace risks are medium to high. These can include sectors such as construction, large warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and offices. The course is aimed at individuals who need to maintain their qualification and stay compliant with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) regulations.

On-Site First Aid at Work Refresher Course in Elgin

For organisations with multiple staff members who need to renew their FAW qualification, arranging on-site training at your workplace can be a more practical option. On-site training offers the following advantages:

  • Flexible scheduling with your preferred dates and times

  • Cost-effective for large teams
  • Group training conducted in one session
  • Reduces time spent travelling and away from work

My experience at Ayotte Recruitment and Training Academy was first class. Three weeks ago, I attended the First Aid and Level 2 Door Supervisor SIA course, and my instructor Peter was very knowledgeable and thorough with his teaching. I learn a lot from him and his staff. Peter and his staff provided the group with some valuable insight into the security industry.
