What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?
The First Aid at Work Refresher, also referred to as the FAW Requalification, is a comprehensive 2-day course aimed at individuals whose FAW certification is nearing expiration. Completing this refresher course in Basildon allows you to extend your Level 3 FAW qualification for another three years.
Unlike the full 3-day FAW course, the refresher programme focuses on revisiting key skills and knowledge. It also provides an opportunity to practice these vital skills with an assessor’s guidance. By participating, you will stay in full compliance with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requirements.
✅ This course is available to individuals who currently hold a valid FAW certificate or those within the 28-day grace period following its expiry.
Eligibility & When to Book
This 2-day First Aid at Work Refresher course is designed for individuals who already hold a valid FAW certificate. To avoid having to attend the full 3-day First Aid at Work course, it’s recommended that you book this refresher before your current certificate expires.
A 28-day grace period is in effect after your certificate has expired. If you miss this window, you will be required to complete the full FAW course from the beginning.
On the first day of the course, you must present a copy of your valid or recently expired FAW certificate for verification.
What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?
By enrolling in the FAW Requalification course in Basildon, you will revisit the full First Aid at Work syllabus, ensuring that your skills and knowledge are current. Over the span of two days, you will have the opportunity to practice essential life-saving techniques and gain confidence in providing first aid in the workplace.
- Assessing casualties and conducting scene surveys
- Understanding first aider responsibilities and infection control
- Administering adult CPR and using an AED
- Managing choking and severe bleeding incidents
- Positioning casualties in the recovery position and managing seizures
- Treating burns, scalds, shock, and minor injuries
- Responding to fractures, head, spinal, and chest injuries
- Addressing eye injuries and potential poisoning cases
- Recognising and treating anaphylaxis with auto-injectors
- Dealing with medical emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes, asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy
Assessment & Certification
The FAW Refresher course in Basildon includes both practical assessments and theoretical evaluation to ensure that you can apply the first aid techniques learned. During the course, you will be assessed through trainer observations, practical demonstrations, and a brief multiple-choice test.
Once you successfully complete the course, you will receive an updated Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate. This new certification will remain valid for another three years and is fully recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Annual Refresher vs This 2-Day FAW Requalification
There is often confusion between the annual refresher and the First Aid at Work Requalification. The annual refresher is a brief course designed to allow you to practise your first aid skills annually. While beneficial, it does not extend or renew your certification.
If your FAW certificate is close to expiry, you will need to attend the 2-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) course. This is the only training that will officially renew your First Aid at Work certification for another three years.
Who Is the Course For?
This 2-day FAW Refresher course is tailored for individuals who are designated first aiders in medium to high-risk environments. It is ideal for professionals working in industries such as construction, manufacturing, warehousing, and large office spaces. If you are responsible for first aid in your workplace and need to maintain your certification in line with HSE guidelines, this course is for you.
