What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification) in Wales?

The First Aid at Work (FAW) Refresher, also known as the FAW Requalification, is a 2-day course for individuals whose FAW certification is nearing expiration. By completing the First Aid at Work Refresher Course in Wales, you can extend your Level 3 FAW qualification for an additional three years.

Unlike the comprehensive three-day course, the refresher programme is specifically tailored to update your knowledge and give you hands-on practice of core skills, all under the guidance of a qualified assessor. It also ensures you remain fully compliant with the latest Health and Safety Executive (HSE) standards.

✅ You are eligible to take this course if your FAW certificate is still valid, or if it has expired within the grace period (typically up to 28 days).

Eligibility & When to Book for the Wales Course

The 2-day First Aid at Work renewal course is exclusively available to individuals who currently hold a valid FAW certificate. To avoid the need to take the full 3-day course, it is recommended that you book your spot before your existing qualification expires.

Should your certificate expire, you have a 28-day grace period to attend the refresher. If your certificate has expired for more than 28 days, you will be required to complete the full First Aid at Work course.

On the first day of training, please ensure you bring along proof of your valid or recently expired FAW certificate for verification.

What Will You Refresh and Practise During the Course?

When you attend the FAW Requalification course in Wales, you will revisit the entire First Aid at Work syllabus, ensuring that your knowledge is current and your certification stays valid. Throughout the two-day course, you will have the opportunity to practice the fundamental skills that every workplace first aider should be proficient in.

  • Understanding the role and responsibilities of a first aider, and infection control protocols
  • Conducting scene surveys and casualty assessments
  • Practising adult CPR and using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Placing a casualty in the recovery position and managing seizures
  • Providing first aid for choking incidents and severe bleeding
  • Managing shock, burns, scalds, and minor injuries
  • Responding to fractures, head, spinal, and chest injuries
  • Providing care for eye injuries and dealing with suspected poisoning
  • Recognising and treating anaphylaxis using auto-injectors
  • Responding effectively to heart attacks, strokes, epilepsy, asthma, and diabetes emergencies

Assessment & Certification for the Wales Course

The First Aid at Work Refresher course in Wales is assessed through a combination of practical demonstrations, trainer evaluations, and a brief multiple-choice exam. This approach ensures that you are capable of confidently using the refreshed skills in real-life situations.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a renewed Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate, which is valid for an additional three years and fully recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Annual Refresher vs 2-Day FAW Requalification

Many people confuse the annual refresher with the First Aid at Work Requalification. The annual refresher is a brief course that allows you to practice your skills every year, but it does not renew your certificate.

If your certificate is nearing expiry, you must complete the 2-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) course. This is the only course that formally extends your First Aid at Work qualification for another three years.

Who Should Attend This Course?

This 2-day FAW Refresher course is tailored for designated first aiders working in medium- to high-risk environments, including construction sites, factories, warehouses, and large office buildings. It is specifically intended for those looking to maintain their certification and remain compliant with HSE regulations.

On-Site First Aid at Work Refresher Course in Wales

If you have a group of employees who need to renew their FAW qualifications, arranging on-site training at your workplace could be a more efficient solution. An accredited instructor can conduct the full 2-day requalification course directly at your premises, enabling your team to refresh their skills collectively.

Opting for on-site training brings several advantages:

  • Convenient scheduling options for dates and times
  • Customised to suit your specific workplace risks
  • Cost-effective for training large teams
  • Training for your entire team in a single session
  • Reduces travel and time away from the workplace

My experience at Ayotte Recruitment and Training Academy was first class. Three weeks ago, I attended the First Aid and Level 2 Door Supervisor SIA course, and my instructor Peter was very knowledgeable and thorough with his teaching. I learn a lot from him and his staff. Peter and his staff provided the group with some valuable insight into the security industry.
