To sell alcohol in Edinburgh or anywhere in Scotland, a Personal Licence is necessary. The first step is completing this Personal Licence Course. This course is completed online from home and is a legal requirement to ensure you fully understand the licensing laws and social responsibilities of selling alcohol.
To work in licensed premises where alcohol is sold, you must take this course and apply for your Personal Licence in Edinburgh through your local licensing board.

While this course has no entry requirements, you will need a laptop or computer with a webcam, microphone, and a stable internet connection for the exam.
The Scottish Certificate for Personal Licence Holders course can be completed in 6 hours. It’s self-paced, allowing you to work around your schedule, and you have up to 12 months to finish the course.
The personal licence course is assessed with a one-hour multiple-choice exam consisting of 40 questions. You need to answer at least 28 out of 40 correctly (70%) to pass.

After completing the course, you’ll receive a Scottish Certificate for Personal Licence Holders at SCQF Level 6, accredited by Highfield Qualifications and accepted by all Scottish licensing boards.
To get an Alcohol Licence, you must be at least 18 years old, complete our accredited Personal Licence Course, and not have had a Personal Licence revoked within the past 5 years. You will need to apply to the Licensing Board in your local area. The application form is available on their website, and there is a £50 application fee.
A Personal Licence is valid for 10 years. The expiry date is displayed on your licence. You must apply for a renewal to keep using it after the expiry date.

The Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 requires that alcohol sales on licensed premises be authorised by a Personal Licence holder. A Personal Licence enables you to supervise or approve the sale of alcohol.
A Personal Licence costs £50.
After submitting your application, it usually takes 2-4 weeks to receive your Personal Licence.
Your personal licence lasts for 10 years, but you must complete refresher training every 5 years.
Your results will be available immediately after the exam.
You can expect to receive your Personal Licence certificate within 2-3 working days following your exam.
To keep your Personal Licence valid, you must complete refresher training every five years and submit your updated certificate to your local licensing board. Failure to complete refresher training means you won’t be able to sell or authorise others to sell alcohol on your behalf.
