What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?
The First Aid at Work (FAW) Refresher course, also known as FAW Requalification, is a two-day training programme designed for individuals whose FAW certification is nearing expiry. Upon completion of this course in Winchester, you will extend your Level 3 FAW certification for another three years.
In contrast to the full three-day FAW course, this refresher is aimed at refreshing your knowledge and giving you the chance to rehearse critical first aid skills under the guidance of a certified assessor. This course ensures you remain fully compliant with the latest Health and Safety Executive (HSE) standards.
✅ This course is available to those with a valid FAW certificate or those within the grace period following its expiry (typically 28 days).
Eligibility & When to Book
The 2-day First Aid at Work Refresher course in Winchester is available exclusively to individuals who currently hold a valid FAW certificate. To avoid having to take the full 3-day First Aid at Work course again, it is recommended that you book your spot before your current certification expires.
You are allowed a 28-day grace period following the expiration of your certificate. However, if more than 28 days have passed since your certificate expired, you will need to retake the complete FAW course.
When attending, please ensure you bring your valid or recently expired FAW certificate as proof on the first day of training.
What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?
By attending the First Aid at Work Requalification, you'll revisit the complete syllabus, ensuring your first aid knowledge is refreshed and your certification stays current. Over the span of two days, you'll get hands-on practice with vital first aid skills necessary for any workplace setting.
- Managing fractures, head, spinal, and chest injuries
- Recognising and treating anaphylaxis with auto-injectors
- Treating shock, burns, scalds, and minor injuries
- Adult CPR and AED practice
- Responding to heart attacks, strokes, asthma, epilepsy, and diabetes
- Care for eye injuries and suspected poisoning
- Scene surveys and casualty assessment
- Recovery position and seizure management
- First aid for choking and severe bleeding
- Understanding first aider responsibilities and infection control
Assessment & Certification
The First Aid at Work Refresher is assessed through a combination of practical demonstrations, trainer observations, and a brief multiple-choice exam. This approach ensures you can apply the skills you've refreshed during the course with confidence.
Upon successful completion, you will receive an updated Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate, which is valid for three more years and fully recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Annual Refresher vs This 2-Day FAW Requalification
It’s easy to confuse the annual refresher with the First Aid at Work Requalification. The annual refresher is a shorter course meant to help you practise your skills once a year. While it is helpful, it does not renew your certificate.
To renew your certificate, you must complete the 2-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) course. This is the only course that officially extends your First Aid at Work qualification for another three years.
Who Is the Course For?
This 2-day FAW Refresher course is intended for appointed first aiders working in medium- to high-risk environments, such as construction sites, factories, warehouses, and large offices. It’s specifically designed for individuals who need to maintain their qualification and comply with HSE requirements.
