What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?

The First Aid at Work (FAW) Refresher, also known as the FAW Requalification, is a 2-day training course for people whose FAW certificate is due to expire. By completing this First Aid at Work Refresher Course in Isle of Wight, you can renew your Level 3 FAW qualification for another three years.

Unlike the full three-day programme, this refresher focuses on updating your knowledge and providing you with the opportunity to practise essential skills under the supervision of an assessor. It also keeps you fully compliant with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance.

✅ You can take this course if you still hold a valid FAW certificate or are within the short grace period after expiry (typically up to 28 days).

Eligibility & When to Book

This 2-day First Aid at Work renewal course is only open to learners who already hold a valid FAW certificate. You should book your place before your current qualification expires to avoid having to retake the full 3-day First Aid at Work course.

There is a 28-day grace period after expiry. If your certificate has lapsed longer than this, you’ll need to restart with the full FAW course.

To attend the course, you’ll also need to bring proof of your current or recently expired FAW certificate on the first day of training.

What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?

By joining the FAW Requalification in Isle of Wight, you’ll cover the complete First Aid at Work syllabus again — ensuring your knowledge is up to date and your certificate remains valid. Over two days, you will practise the essential skills every workplace first aider needs.

  • Understanding first aider responsibilities and infection control
  • Scene surveys and casualty assessment
  • Adult CPR and AED practice
  • Recovery position and seizure management
  • First aid for choking and severe bleeding
  • Treating shock, burns, scalds, and minor injuries
  • Managing fractures, head, spinal, and chest injuries
  • Care for eye injuries and suspected poisoning
  • Recognising and treating anaphylaxis with auto-injectors
  • Responding to heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, and diabetes

Assessment & Certification

The First Aid at Work Refresher in Isle of Wight is assessed through a mix of practical demonstrations, trainer observation, and a short multiple-choice test. This ensures you can confidently apply the skills you’ve refreshed during the course.

On successful completion, you will receive a renewed Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate, valid for another three years and fully recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Annual Refresher vs This 2-Day FAW Requalification

It’s common to mix up the annual refresher with the First Aid at Work Requalification. The annual refresher is just a short course that helps you practise your skills once a year. It’s useful, but it won’t renew your certificate.

If your certificate is expiring, you will need to complete the 2-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) course. This is the only course that formally renews your First Aid at Work qualification for a period of three years.

Who Is the Course For?

This 2-day FAW Refresher is designed for appointed first aiders in medium- to high-risk workplaces, such as construction sites, factories, warehouses, and large offices. It’s designed for those who need to keep their qualification up to date and remain compliant with HSE requirements.

On-Site First Aid at Work Refresher Course in Isle of Wight

If you have several staff who need to renew their FAW qualification, it may be more convenient to arrange on-site training at your own workplace. An accredited trainer can deliver the full 2-day requalification course at your premises, allowing your team to update their skills together.

On-site training offers several benefits:

  • Flexible choice of dates and times
  • Adapted to your workplace risks
  • Cost-effective for larger teams
  • Group training in one session
  • Less travel and time away from work

My experience at Ayotte Recruitment and Training Academy was first class. Three weeks ago, I attended the First Aid and Level 2 Door Supervisor SIA course, and my instructor Peter was very knowledgeable and thorough with his teaching. I learn a lot from him and his staff. Peter and his staff provided the group with some valuable insight into the security industry.
