What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?
The First Aid at Work (FAW) Refresher, also referred to as the FAW Requalification, is a two-day course designed for individuals whose FAW certification is approaching its expiration. Completing this First Aid at Work Refresher Course in Prestwick allows you to extend your Level 3 FAW qualification for an additional three years.
In contrast to the full three-day course, this refresher is specifically aimed at updating your existing knowledge, while also providing hands-on practice of key skills under the supervision of a qualified assessor. This course ensures that you remain fully compliant with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) standards.
✅ You are eligible to attend this course if you have a current FAW certificate or are within the grace period following its expiry (usually up to 28 days).
Eligibility & When to Book
This 2-day First Aid at Work Refresher course is available exclusively to individuals who currently hold a valid FAW certificate. It's recommended to book your course well in advance of your certificate's expiry to avoid the need to attend the full 3-day FAW programme.
If your certificate has expired, you have a 28-day grace period to renew it. After this period, you will need to complete the full FAW course again from the beginning.
On the first day of training, you’ll need to provide proof of your existing or recently expired FAW certificate to be eligible for the course.
What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?
During the FAW Requalification course in Prestwick, you will revisit the entire First Aid at Work syllabus, ensuring your skills are current and that your qualification remains valid. Over the two days, you will rehearse key first aid skills that are vital for any workplace first aider.
- Understanding the role and responsibilities of a first aider, and infection control
- Conducting scene surveys and casualty assessments
- Practising adult CPR and using an AED
- Managing the recovery position and seizures
- First aid for choking and severe bleeding
- Treating shock, burns, scalds, and minor injuries
- Managing fractures, and injuries to the head, spine, and chest
- Providing care for eye injuries and suspected poisoning
- Recognising and treating anaphylaxis using auto-injectors
- Responding to heart attacks, strokes, epilepsy, asthma, and diabetes
Assessment & Certification
The First Aid at Work Refresher course in Prestwick is evaluated through a combination of practical exercises, trainer observations, and a brief multiple-choice exam. This method guarantees that you are able to confidently apply the skills you've refreshed throughout the course.
Upon successful completion, you will be awarded a renewed Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate, valid for another three years. This qualification is fully recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Annual Refresher vs This 2-Day FAW Requalification
There’s often confusion between the annual refresher and the First Aid at Work Requalification. The annual refresher is a short session designed to help you practice your skills annually. While it is beneficial, it does not renew your certification.
If your certificate is due to expire, you must complete the 2-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) course. This is the only course that formally extends your First Aid at Work qualification for a further three years.
Who Is the Course For?
This 2-day FAW Refresher course is intended for designated first aiders in workplaces with medium to high risks, such as construction sites, industrial facilities, warehouses, and large office environments. It is ideal for individuals who need to keep their qualifications current and remain compliant with HSE guidelines.

There are several advantages to on-site training:
