The SMSTS Refresher Course is for site managers currently in managerial roles who need to renew their CITB SMSTS certificate.
This course is designed to refresh and reinforce your knowledge of key aspects of site safety, health, welfare, and the environment.
To be eligible for the SMSTS Refresher course, you must:
If you take the SMSTS Refresher course online via Zoom, you'll also need a PC or laptop with a microphone, webcam, and a reliable internet connection.
Your CITB SMSTS Refresher exam takes place on the second day and includes 25 questions covering all key course areas.
The format includes 18 multiple-choice questions (worth one mark each) and 7 short written-answer questions (worth two marks each).
A passing score is 81% (26 out of 32), and the exam duration is 35 minutes. You are allowed to use your course books in the last 15 minutes.
If you fail the SMSTS Refresher exam but score between 72%–78% (23–25 out of 32), you can re-sit the exam. Failing the re-sit, however, will require you to complete the full SMSTS course.
Scoring below 69% (22 or fewer correct answers) means you must retake the full SMSTS course before attempting the exam again.

Yes! The course is available online via Zoom. Many learners prefer this option as it is more affordable and eliminates travel time and costs. The online course covers the same content as the classroom version.
Once you pass, you’ll receive an SMSTS Refresher certificate that remains valid for five years. To renew it, you must complete the SMSTS Refresher course before the five-year period ends.
