What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?

The First Aid at Work Refresher (also referred to as FAW Requalification) is a two-day requalification programme designed for individuals whose existing FAW certification is approaching its expiry date. By completing this First Aid at Work Refresher Course in Cornwall, you can extend your Level 3 FAW qualification for a further three years.

This shorter course is intended for those who have already completed the full First Aid at Work training. It focuses on refreshing your existing knowledge, updating you on current practices, and giving you time to revisit key practical skills with guidance from a qualified assessor. It also ensures you remain aligned with current Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requirements.

✅ You are eligible to enrol if your FAW certificate is still valid or has only recently expired within the permitted grace period (usually up to 28 days).

Eligibility & When to Book

This refresher course is intended for those who already hold a valid First Aid at Work (FAW) certificate and are looking to renew it before it expires. Booking in advance is important, as letting your qualification lapse may mean you need to complete the full three-day First Aid at Work course again.

If your certificate has recently expired, you may still be able to take this course within the short grace period, which is typically up to 28 days. After this timeframe, requalification is no longer permitted, and you will need to start over.

You’ll be asked to provide evidence of your current or recently expired FAW certificate when attending the training, so please ensure you bring this with you on the first day.

What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?

During this First Aid at Work Refresher Course in Cornwall, you’ll revisit the core principles of workplace first aid while strengthening your practical ability to respond in real situations. The course is designed to reinforce your confidence and ensure you can apply your knowledge effectively when it matters most.

Across the two-day training, you will work through essential first aid techniques and emergency procedures required for maintaining a valid FAW qualification.

  • Key responsibilities of a workplace first aider, including safe practice and infection control measures
  • Assessing an incident, carrying out scene checks, and prioritising casualties
  • Performing CPR and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) correctly
  • Responding to choking incidents and controlling severe bleeding
  • Managing common medical emergencies such as heart attack, stroke, asthma, epilepsy, and diabetes
  • Identifying and treating anaphylaxis, including the use of auto-injectors
  • Placing casualties in the recovery position and handling seizure situations safely
  • Dealing with fractures and injuries affecting the head, spine, and chest
  • Providing first aid for burns, scalds, shock, and other minor injuries
  • Handling eye injuries and responding to suspected poisoning cases

Assessment & Certification

During the First Aid at Work Refresher Course in Cornwall, your performance will be evaluated through a combination of hands-on assessments, continuous observation by the trainer, and a short multiple-choice test. This approach ensures you can not only recall key knowledge but also demonstrate your ability to respond effectively in real-life scenarios.

Once you successfully complete the course, you’ll be awarded a renewed Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate. This certification is valid for three years and meets current Health and Safety Executive (HSE) standards.

Annual Refresher vs This 2-Day FAW Requalification

Many learners confuse the annual refresher with the official First Aid at Work requalification. While the annual refresher is useful for revisiting skills and staying confident throughout the year, it does not extend the validity of your certificate.

To renew your qualification, you must complete the 2-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) course. This is the recognised route for maintaining your certification and ensuring it remains valid for another three years.

Who Is the Course For?

This two-day FAW Refresher course is suitable for workplace first aiders who are required to maintain an active qualification. It is particularly relevant for those working in environments where there is a higher level of risk, including construction sites, industrial settings, warehouses, and larger office spaces.

If your role involves responsibility for first aid provision, this course allows you to stay compliant with HSE guidelines while keeping your knowledge and practical skills up to date.

On-Site First Aid at Work Refresher Course in Cornwall

For organisations with multiple team members due for renewal, arranging on-site training can be a practical and efficient option. The First Aid at Work Refresher Course can be delivered directly at your workplace in Cornwall, allowing your staff to complete their requalification together in a familiar environment.

An experienced trainer will come to your premises to deliver the full two-day course, ensuring your team receives the same accredited training without having to travel.

Choosing on-site training can offer a range of advantages:

  • Schedule training at times that suit your business operations
  • Course content tailored to reflect your specific workplace risks
  • More cost-efficient when training larger groups
  • Train your entire team together in a single organised session
  • Reduce downtime by eliminating travel and time away from site

My experience at Ayotte Recruitment and Training Academy was first class. Three weeks ago, I attended the First Aid and Level 2 Door Supervisor SIA course, and my instructor Peter was very knowledgeable and thorough with his teaching. I learn a lot from him and his staff. Peter and his staff provided the group with some valuable insight into the security industry.
