What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?
The First Aid at Work (FAW) Refresher, also referred to as the FAW Requalification, is a 2-day course designed for individuals whose FAW certification is nearing expiration. By attending the First Aid at Work Refresher Course in Hastings, you can extend your Level 3 FAW qualification for an additional three years.
Unlike the full three-day programme, this refresher focuses on refreshing your knowledge and gives you the chance to hone vital first aid skills under the guidance of an experienced assessor. This ensures you remain compliant with the latest Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requirements.
✅ You are eligible to take this course if your FAW certificate is still valid or if it has expired within the grace period (usually up to 28 days).
Eligibility & When to Book
This 2-day First Aid at Work Refresher course is exclusively available to those who currently hold a valid FAW certificate. To ensure you don’t need to complete the full 3-day First Aid at Work course, it’s advisable to book your place before your existing qualification expires.
You can still take the course within a 28-day grace period following the expiry of your certificate. However, if your certificate has expired for more than 28 days, you will be required to take the full FAW course again.
On the first day of training, you must bring along proof of your valid or recently expired FAW certificate for verification.
What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?
By attending the FAW Requalification course in Hastings, you will revisit the entire First Aid at Work syllabus, ensuring your knowledge is current and your certificate stays valid. Over the span of two days, you'll practise the crucial skills needed by every first aider in the workplace.
- Managing fractures, head, spinal, and chest injuries
- Recovery position and managing seizures
- Adult CPR and using an AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
- Scene assessment and casualty evaluation
- Responding to medical emergencies like heart attacks, strokes, asthma, epilepsy, and diabetes
- Providing first aid for choking and severe bleeding
- Treating shock, burns, scalds, and minor injuries
- Recognising and responding to anaphylaxis using auto-injectors
- Caring for eye injuries and suspected poisoning
- Understanding first aider duties and infection control
Assessment & Certification
The First Aid at Work Refresher course in Hastings is evaluated through a combination of hands-on practical exercises, trainer assessments, and a brief multiple-choice questionnaire. This approach ensures that you can competently demonstrate the refreshed skills you've gained throughout the course.
Upon successful completion, you will be awarded a renewed Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate, valid for another three years and recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Annual Refresher vs 2-Day FAW Requalification
The annual refresher course is often confused with the First Aid at Work Requalification. The refresher is a brief session designed to help you practice your skills each year, but it doesn't renew your certification.
If your certificate is nearing expiration, you must complete the 2-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) course. This is the only recognised course that extends your First Aid at Work qualification for an additional three years.
Who Is the Course For?
This 2-day FAW Refresher is intended for first aiders in medium- to high-risk environments such as construction sites, industrial facilities, warehouses, and large offices. It's tailored for individuals who need to update their certification and stay compliant with HSE guidelines.
