What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?
The First Aid at Work (FAW) Refresher, sometimes called the FAW Requalification, is a 2-day course for learners whose FAW certificate is nearing its expiry date. By completing the First Aid at Work Refresher Course in Medway, you can renew your Level 3 FAW qualification for a further three years.
As this is a refresher rather than the full three-day programme, the focus is on updating knowledge and re-practising core skills with guidance from a trainer/assessor. It also helps you remain aligned with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) expectations for workplace first aid cover.
✅ You can take this course if your FAW certificate is still valid, or if it has only recently expired and you are within the short grace period (typically up to 28 days).
Eligibility & When to Book
This 2-day First Aid at Work renewal course is available only to learners who already hold a valid FAW certificate. To avoid needing to redo the full 3-day First Aid at Work course, it’s best to book your refresher before your current certificate expires.
A grace period of up to 28 days is usually allowed after expiry. If your certificate has been expired for longer than this, you’ll need to retake the complete FAW course instead of the refresher.
You’ll also be asked to bring evidence of your current or recently expired FAW certificate on day one of the training.
What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?
By attending the FAW Requalification in Medway, you’ll revisit the full First Aid at Work syllabus to ensure your knowledge remains current and your certificate stays valid. Across the two days, you’ll practise the essential skills needed by workplace first aiders.
- First aider responsibilities, including infection prevention and control
- Assessing the scene and carrying out casualty checks
- Adult CPR practice and safe AED use
- Using the recovery position and responding to seizures
- Managing choking incidents and severe bleeding
- Treating shock, burns, scalds, and common minor injuries
- Managing fractures and suspected head, spinal, and chest injuries
- Responding to eye injuries and suspected poisoning
- Recognising anaphylaxis and using an auto-injector correctly
- Responding to heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, and diabetic emergencies
Assessment & Certification
The First Aid at Work Refresher in Medway is assessed using a combination of practical demonstrations, trainer observation throughout the course, and a short multiple-choice test. This approach confirms you can safely apply the skills you’ve reviewed and practised over the two days.
After successful completion, you’ll receive a renewed Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate. It remains valid for a further three years and is fully recognised in line with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requirements.
Annual Refresher vs This 2-Day FAW Requalification
People often confuse the annual refresher with the First Aid at Work Requalification. An annual refresher is a brief practice session taken once a year to keep skills fresh. It can be helpful, but it does not renew your certificate.
If your certificate is nearing expiry, you’ll need the 2-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) course. This is the course that formally renews your First Aid at Work qualification for another three-year period.
Who Is the Course For?
This 2-day FAW Refresher is intended for qualified first aiders in medium- to high-risk workplaces, including construction sites, factories, warehouses, and larger office settings. It’s designed for anyone who needs to keep their qualification current and continue meeting HSE expectations for workplace first aid cover.
