What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?
The First Aid at Work (FAW) Refresher, often referred to as the FAW Requalification, is a 2-day training programme for individuals whose First Aid at Work certificate is approaching expiry. By completing this First Aid at Work Refresher Course in Wigan, you can renew your Level 3 FAW qualification for a further three years.
Unlike the full three-day First Aid at Work course, this refresher focuses on updating your knowledge and giving you the opportunity to practise key first aid skills again under the guidance of a qualified assessor. It ensures that your certification remains valid and compliant with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommendations.
✅ You can attend this course if you currently hold a valid FAW certificate or if it has expired within the short grace period (usually up to 28 days).
Eligibility & When to Book
This 2-day First Aid at Work renewal course is designed specifically for learners who already hold a valid FAW certificate. To avoid having to retake the full 3-day First Aid at Work course, it’s recommended that you book the refresher before your existing qualification expires.
If your certificate has expired, there is usually a 28-day grace period during which you can still take the refresher course. If more time has passed, you will normally need to complete the full FAW course again.
You will also be required to bring proof of your current or recently expired FAW certificate on the first day of training.
What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?
When attending the FAW Requalification in Wigan, you will revisit the complete First Aid at Work syllabus to ensure your knowledge and practical skills remain up to date. Over the two-day course, you will practise the essential techniques required for workplace first aiders.
- Understanding first aider responsibilities and infection control
- Scene surveys and casualty assessment
- Adult CPR and AED practice
- Recovery position and seizure management
- First aid for choking and severe bleeding
- Treating shock, burns, scalds, and minor injuries
- Managing fractures, head, spinal, and chest injuries
- Care for eye injuries and suspected poisoning
- Recognising and treating anaphylaxis with auto-injectors
- Responding to heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, and diabetes
Assessment & Certification
The First Aid at Work Refresher in Wigan is assessed through a combination of practical demonstrations, trainer observation, and a short multiple-choice test. This ensures that learners can confidently apply the refreshed skills in real workplace situations.
Once you successfully complete the training, you will receive a renewed Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate that remains valid for three years and is fully recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Annual Refresher vs This 2-Day FAW Requalification
The annual refresher and the First Aid at Work Requalification are often confused. The annual refresher is a short session designed to help first aiders practise their skills each year, but it does not extend the validity of your certificate.
If your certificate is due to expire, you must complete the 2-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) course. This course is the only training that officially renews your First Aid at Work certificate for another three-year period.
Who Is the Course For?
This 2-day FAW Refresher course is suitable for appointed workplace first aiders working in medium- to high-risk environments such as construction sites, factories, warehouses, and large offices. It is designed for those who need to keep their qualification current and remain compliant with HSE workplace regulations.
