What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?
The FAW Refresher, also known as the FAW Requalification course, is a focused 2-day programme designed for individuals whose First Aid at Work (FAW) certification is nearing its expiration. By completing this refresher course in England, you will extend your Level 3 FAW qualification for an additional three years.
This course, unlike the full three-day First Aid at Work programme, provides a streamlined update to your existing knowledge, ensuring that your skills remain fresh. The refresher also offers you the chance to practice key first aid techniques under the guidance of a certified assessor, while ensuring you comply with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) regulations.
✅ You can enrol in this course if you currently hold a valid FAW certificate or if it has expired within the 28-day grace period.
Eligibility & When to Book
The 2-day First Aid at Work Refresher course is available to those who currently hold a valid FAW certificate. It is recommended that you register for the course before your certification expires to avoid needing to complete the full 3-day First Aid at Work course.
If your certificate has already expired, you have up to 28 days within which you can still complete the refresher course. If it has been more than 28 days since expiry, you will be required to take the full FAW course to renew your qualification.
On the first day of the course, you will need to provide proof of your valid or recently expired FAW certificate to confirm your eligibility for the refresher course.
What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?
Throughout the 2-day FAW Refresher course in England, you will revisit essential elements of the First Aid at Work syllabus to ensure your skills and knowledge are up to date. The course allows you to practice core first aid skills, ensuring that you remain prepared for workplace emergencies.
- Assessing the scene and casualty to determine appropriate action
- Recognising and treating anaphylaxis, including the use of auto-injectors
- Responding to heart attack, stroke, asthma, epilepsy, and diabetes emergencies
- Handling seizures and supporting individuals in the recovery position
- Managing fractures, head, spinal, and chest injuries
- Administering adult CPR and using AEDs
- First aid for choking and severe bleeding
- Treating shock, burns, scalds, and minor injuries
- Infection control and first aider responsibilities
- Dealing with eye injuries and suspected poisoning
Assessment & Certification
The FAW Refresher course in England is assessed through practical demonstrations and trainer observations, as well as a brief multiple-choice test. This assessment ensures you can confidently apply the first-aid skills covered throughout the course.
Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a renewed Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate. This qualification will be valid for another three years and is fully recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Annual Refresher vs The 2-Day FAW Requalification
There’s often confusion between the annual refresher and the First Aid at Work Requalification. While the annual refresher is a brief course aimed at helping you maintain your skills, it does not extend your certificate.
If your FAW certificate is about to expire, you will need to complete the 2-day FAW Refresher course. This course is the official method of renewing your qualification for an additional three years.
Who Is the Course For?
This 2-day FAW Refresher course is aimed at first aiders working in environments with moderate to high safety risks. This includes roles within construction sites, factories, warehouses, large office environments, and other high-risk workplaces. It’s essential for those who need to maintain their qualification and remain compliant with HSE regulations.
