Ofqual Accreditation of NEBOSH International Diploma

The NEBOSH Level 6 International Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals (2023 specification) has received accreditation and credit rating from Ofqual at RQF Level 6, comprising 42 credits.

What were the changes made to the qualification after Ofqual accreditation?
Ofqual oversees qualifications, examinations, and assessments in England. It also regulates internationally offered qualifications like the NEBOSH Diplomas, provided they are taken by learners in England.

Due to the change in regulator from Scotland’s SQA Accreditation, the Diplomas will now be considered new specifications (May 2023). They will adopt new qualification titles as per Ofqual requirements:

  • NEBOSH Level 6 National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals (May 2023)
  • NEBOSH Level 6 International Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals (May 2023)

The changes made to the qualification after Ofqual regulation facilitate IOSH membership recognition for international learners.

IOSH Membership Recognition

In 2022, IOSH revised its accreditation procedures, confirming that only regulated qualifications would be accredited. Since the previous accrediting body, SQA did not regulate outside the UK, its logo could not be used on certificates for international assessments. This change affected NEBOSH learners, who were ineligible for IOSH membership.

Ofqual regulation allowed learners to meet IOSH's accreditation criteria regardless of where learners take their Diploma assessments.

Therefore, after Ofqual, NEBOSH National and International Diplomas meet the academic requirements for applying to IOSH membership at the appropriate grade.

Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Entry Requirements

  • While entry does not require compulsory qualifications, learners are strongly advised to complete the NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety beforehand.
  • Proficiency in English is important for comprehending and communicating the syllabus concepts effectively. NEBOSH recommends a minimum English language proficiency equivalent to an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.0 or higher.

NEBOSH International Diploma Duration

The qualification includes at least 185 taught hours, complemented by 144 self-study and 80 assessment hours.
To calculate how many days are equivalent to a total of 185 hours of taught hours, 144 hours of recommended self-study, and 80 hours of assessment time, we'll convert each into days:

Taught Hours:
185 hours / 8 hours per day (assuming a typical workday) = 23.125 days

Self-study Hours:
144 hours / 8 hours per day = 18 days

Assessment Hours:
80 hours / 8 hours per day = 10 days

Total Duration:
Total days = 23.125 days (taught) + 18 days (self-study) + 10 days (assessment)

Total duration ≈ 51.125 days
