What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?
The First Aid at Work (FAW) Refresher, also referred to as the FAW Requalification, is a 2-day course designed for individuals whose FAW certification is nearing its expiry. By completing this Refresher Course in Renfrew, you will be able to extend your Level 3 FAW qualification for another three years.
Unlike the comprehensive three-day First Aid at Work course, the refresher course focuses on revisiting key knowledge areas and giving you the chance to refine essential skills under the guidance of a qualified assessor. It ensures that you stay fully compliant with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) standards.
✅ You are eligible for this course if you currently hold a valid FAW certificate or if it has expired within the 28-day grace period.
Eligibility & When to Book
This 2-day First Aid at Work Refresher course is available only to individuals who currently hold a valid FAW certificate. It’s best to secure your place before your existing certification expires to avoid the need to enrol in the full 3-day First Aid at Work course.
If your certificate has expired, there is a 28-day grace period during which you can still attend the refresher course. Beyond this window, you will be required to complete the full FAW course again.
On the first day of training, make sure to bring proof of your valid or recently expired FAW certificate to ensure you meet the course requirements.
What Will You Refresh and Practise During the Course?
When you take the FAW Refresher course in Renfrew, you’ll revisit the entire First Aid at Work syllabus, ensuring your skills are refreshed and your certification remains current. Over the two days, you will have the chance to practice key skills needed in the workplace, keeping you ready for any emergency situation.
- Assessing the scene and evaluating casualties
- Essential first aider duties and infection prevention
- Performing adult CPR and using an AED
- Managing seizures and placing someone in the recovery position
- Administering first aid for choking and severe bleeding
- Providing care for shock, burns, scalds, and minor injuries
- Treating fractures, head, spinal, and chest injuries
- Addressing eye injuries and suspected poisoning
- Recognising and handling anaphylactic reactions with auto-injectors
- Responding to medical emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes, asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy
Assessment & Certification
The assessment for the First Aid at Work Refresher course in Renfrew includes a combination of practical exercises, trainer observations, and a brief multiple-choice assessment. This approach ensures that you can effectively apply the skills you've refreshed throughout the course.
Once you successfully complete the course, you will be awarded a renewed Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate, valid for an additional three years and recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Annual Refresher vs 2-Day FAW Requalification
It’s easy to confuse the annual refresher with the full FAW Requalification course. The annual refresher is a brief session aimed at practising your skills each year, but it does not renew your certificate.
To extend your certification, you must complete the 2-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) course. This is the only course that renews your First Aid at Work qualification for another three-year period.
Who Should Take This Course?
The 2-day FAW Refresher course is ideal for designated first aiders working in medium- to high-risk environments such as construction sites, factories, warehouses, and large office buildings. It’s intended for those who need to maintain their qualification and stay compliant with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) regulations.
