What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?

The First Aid at Work (FAW) Refresher, or FAW Requalification, is a 2-day course designed for individuals whose FAW certification is approaching its expiration date. Upon completing this First Aid at Work Refresher Course in Strabane, you can renew your Level 3 FAW qualification, extending its validity for an additional three years.

While the original three-day course covers broader topics, this refresher focuses on refreshing your knowledge and offering hands-on practice of key first aid skills, all under the guidance of an experienced assessor. It ensures that you remain fully compliant with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) standards and regulations.

✅ This course is available if your FAW certificate is still valid or if you are within the grace period following its expiry (usually up to 28 days).

Eligibility & When to Book

This 2-day First Aid at Work Refresher course is exclusively available to individuals who currently hold a valid FAW certificate. It’s best to book your place before your existing qualification expires to avoid having to complete the full 3-day First Aid at Work course again.

A 28-day grace period is available after your certificate expires. However, if the lapse exceeds this period, you will need to start from scratch with the full FAW course.

To attend the course, please bring proof of your valid or recently expired FAW certificate on the first day of training.

What Will You Refresh/Practice During the Course?

When you join the FAW Refresher course in Strabane, you’ll revisit the complete First Aid at Work syllabus, ensuring your knowledge is up to date and your certificate remains valid. Over two days, you will have the opportunity to practice essential first aid skills required in every workplace.

  • Understanding the role and responsibilities of a first aider, as well as infection control practices
  • Conducting scene surveys and assessing casualties
  • Practising adult CPR and using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Managing the recovery position and handling seizures
  • Providing first aid for choking and severe bleeding
  • Treating shock, burns, scalds, and minor injuries
  • Managing fractures, head, spinal, and chest injuries
  • Caring for eye injuries and suspected poisoning
  • Recognising and treating anaphylaxis using auto-injectors
  • Responding to emergencies such as heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, and diabetes

Assessment & Certification

The First Aid at Work Refresher course in Strabane is assessed using a combination of practical demonstrations, trainer observation, and a brief multiple-choice assessment. This approach ensures you can confidently apply the first aid skills you’ve updated during the course.

Upon successful completion, you will be awarded a renewed Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate, valid for an additional three years, and fully recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Annual Refresher vs This 2-Day FAW Requalification

Many people confuse the annual refresher course with the First Aid at Work Requalification. The annual refresher is a shorter session that allows you to practice your skills once a year. While valuable, it does not extend your certification.

If your certificate is approaching expiry, the 2-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) course is required. This is the official course that renews your First Aid at Work qualification for a further three years.

Who Is the Course For?

This 2-day FAW Refresher course is specifically designed for designated first aiders working in medium- to high-risk environments such as construction sites, factories, warehouses, and large office spaces. It is for those who need to renew their qualification and remain fully compliant with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) standards.

My experience at Ayotte Recruitment and Training Academy was first class. Three weeks ago, I attended the First Aid and Level 2 Door Supervisor SIA course, and my instructor Peter was very knowledgeable and thorough with his teaching. I learn a lot from him and his staff. Peter and his staff provided the group with some valuable insight into the security industry.
