What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?
The First Aid at Work (FAW) Refresher, often called FAW Requalification, is a 2-day programme designed for individuals whose current FAW certificate is nearing expiry. Completing this refresher course in Blackburn allows you to extend your Level 3 FAW certification for a further three years.
In contrast to the full three-day course, this refresher concentrates on refreshing your existing knowledge and gives you the chance to practise vital first aid skills under the guidance of a qualified assessor. It also ensures ongoing compliance with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) standards.
✅ You are eligible to attend this course if your FAW certificate is still valid or has recently expired within the 28-day grace period.
Eligibility & When to Book
The 2-day First Aid at Work Refresher course is available to individuals who already possess a valid FAW certificate. To ensure you don’t have to retake the full 3-day course, it’s recommended that you book your place before your current certification expires.
A 28-day grace period is provided after your certificate expires. If the grace period has passed, you will need to re-enrol for the full First Aid at Work course instead of the refresher.
On the first day of training, you must bring proof of your valid or recently expired FAW certificate in order to attend the course.
What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?
By enrolling in the FAW Refresher course in Blackburn, you will review the full First Aid at Work syllabus, ensuring your knowledge is up-to-date. This course, spanning two days, provides you with hands-on practice in critical first aid techniques under the supervision of an experienced assessor.
- Providing first aid for choking and severe bleeding situations
- Managing shock, burns, scalds, and treating minor injuries
- Recognising and managing anaphylaxis with auto-injectors
- Administering Adult CPR and using AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators)
- Reinforcing the core responsibilities of a first aider, including infection control
- Handling fractures and managing head, spinal, and chest injuries
- Learning the recovery position and proper seizure management
- Responding appropriately to medical emergencies like heart attacks, strokes, epilepsy, asthma, and diabetes
- Delivering care for eye injuries and dealing with suspected poisoning
- Conducting scene surveys and assessing casualties
Assessment & Certification
The First Aid at Work Refresher course in Blackburn is assessed through a combination of practical demonstrations, trainer observations, and a brief multiple-choice test. This evaluation ensures that you are confident in applying the skills you’ve practised throughout the course.
Upon successfully completing the course, you will receive an updated Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate, which remains valid for another three years. This certification is fully recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and meets regulatory standards.
Annual Refresher vs This 2-Day FAW Requalification
It’s important to distinguish between the annual refresher and the FAW Requalification course. The annual refresher is a shorter course designed to help you maintain and practise your first aid skills annually. While it’s beneficial for regular practice, it does not renew your First Aid at Work certification.
If your certificate is nearing expiry, the 2-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) course is required. This is the only course that formally renews your First Aid at Work qualification for a full three-year period, ensuring ongoing compliance with HSE regulations.
Who Is the Course For?
This 2-day FAW Refresher course is tailored for designated first aiders working in medium- to high-risk environments, such as construction sites, factories, warehouses, and large office settings. It is ideal for those who need to renew their qualification and ensure they continue to meet HSE requirements.
