What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?

The First Aid at Work (FAW) Refresher, or FAW Requalification, is a 2-day course designed for individuals whose FAW certificate is nearing expiry. Completing this refresher course in Scotland allows you to extend your Level 3 FAW certification for an additional three years.

Unlike the comprehensive three-day FAW course, the refresher is focused on reinforcing your skills and updating your knowledge. You will have the chance to practise key first aid techniques under the guidance of an experienced assessor, ensuring you stay compliant with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) standards.

✅ You can attend this course if your FAW certificate is still valid or within the grace period following its expiry (typically up to 28 days).

Eligibility & When to Book

To enrol in this 2-day First Aid at Work Refresher course, you must already hold a valid FAW certificate. It’s recommended to secure your booking before your certificate expires to avoid the need to complete the full 3-day FAW programme again.

If your certificate has expired, there is a 28-day grace period during which you can still take the refresher course. Beyond this period, you will be required to start fresh with the full FAW course.

On the first day of training, be sure to bring a copy of your valid or recently expired FAW certificate for verification.

What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?

By attending the FAW Requalification course in Scotland, you will review the entire First Aid at Work syllabus, ensuring your knowledge stays current and your certificate remains valid. Throughout the 2-day training, you will hone essential skills that every workplace first aider must be proficient in.

  • Understanding the roles and responsibilities of a first aider, including infection control
  • Conducting scene surveys and casualty assessments
  • Practising adult CPR and AED use
  • Managing the recovery position and responding to seizures
  • Providing first aid for choking and severe bleeding
  • Treating shock, burns, scalds, and minor injuries
  • Handling fractures, head, spinal, and chest injuries
  • Caring for eye injuries and managing suspected poisoning
  • Recognising and treating anaphylaxis with auto-injectors
  • Responding to medical emergencies like heart attacks, strokes, epilepsy, asthma, and diabetes

Assessment & Certification

The First Aid at Work Refresher course in Scotland is assessed using a combination of practical demonstrations, direct observation by the trainer, and a brief multiple-choice test. This assessment process ensures you can confidently apply the skills you have refreshed throughout the course.

Upon successful completion, you will receive a renewed Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate. This certificate is valid for three years and is fully recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Annual Refresher vs This 2-Day FAW Requalification

Many people confuse the annual refresher with the First Aid at Work Requalification. The annual refresher is a brief course that allows you to practise your skills once per year. While it’s beneficial, it does not extend or renew your certificate.

To renew your certificate, you will need to complete the 2-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) course. This is the official course that renews your First Aid at Work qualification for another three-year period.

Who Is the Course For?

The 2-day FAW Refresher course is intended for designated first aiders working in medium- to high-risk environments, such as construction sites, manufacturing plants, warehouses, and large offices. This course is ideal for those who need to update their qualification and maintain compliance with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) standards.

If you have a group of employees who need to renew their FAW certification, organising on-site training at your workplace can be a convenient solution. My experience at Ayotte Recruitment and Training Academy was first class. Three weeks ago, I attended the First Aid and Level 2 Door Supervisor SIA course, and my instructor Peter was very knowledgeable and thorough with his teaching. I learn a lot from him and his staff. Peter and his staff provided the group with some valuable insight into the security industry.
