What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?
The First Aid at Work (FAW) Refresher, also referred to as FAW Requalification, is a 2-day course designed for individuals whose FAW certificate is nearing expiration. Completing this refresher course in Barnsley allows you to renew your Level 3 FAW qualification for an additional three years.
Unlike the full 3-day First Aid at Work course, this refresher focuses on updating your knowledge and providing you with the opportunity to practice key skills under the guidance of an assessor. It ensures you stay compliant with the latest guidelines from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
✅ You can take this course if your FAW certificate is still valid or within the 28-day grace period following expiry.
Eligibility & When to Book
This 2-day First Aid at Work renewal course is available only to those who currently hold a valid FAW certificate. It’s advisable to book your place before your certificate expires to avoid having to complete the full 3-day First Aid at Work course again.
A 28-day grace period is provided after your certificate expires. If more than 28 days have passed, you will need to retake the full FAW course.
To attend the course, you must bring proof of your valid or recently expired FAW certificate on the first day of training.
What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?
By enrolling in the FAW Requalification course in Barnsley, you’ll revisit the full First Aid at Work syllabus, ensuring your knowledge is refreshed and your certification remains valid. Over two days, you will practice vital skills that every workplace first aider must master.
- Managing fractures, head, spinal, and chest injuries
- Adult CPR and using an AED effectively
- Understanding first aider responsibilities and infection control
- Responding to heart attacks, strokes, asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy
- Scene surveys and casualty assessment
- Treating shock, burns, scalds, and other minor injuries
- Care for eye injuries and suspected poisoning
- First aid for choking and severe bleeding
- Recovery position and managing seizures
- Recognising and treating anaphylaxis with auto-injectors
Assessment & Certification
During the FAW Refresher course in Barnsley, assessment is carried out through a combination of hands-on demonstrations, trainer observations, and a brief multiple-choice exam. This ensures that you can apply the refreshed skills with confidence in real workplace situations.
Upon successful completion, you will receive a renewed Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate, which is valid for an additional three years and fully recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Annual Refresher vs the 2-Day FAW Requalification
Many people confuse the annual refresher with the First Aid at Work Requalification. The annual refresher is a brief course designed to help you practise your first aid skills once a year. While it’s beneficial, it does not renew your certification.
If your certificate is close to expiring, you’ll need to complete the 2-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) course. This is the only training that formally renews your First Aid at Work qualification for another three years.
Who Is the Course For?
This 2-day FAW Refresher course is tailored for appointed first aiders working in medium to high-risk environments. It is ideal for individuals in industries such as construction, warehousing, manufacturing, hospitality, and large offices who need to renew their qualifications and remain compliant with HSE standards.
