What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?
The First Aid at Work (FAW) Refresher — sometimes referred to as the FAW Requalification — is a two-day course for existing first aiders whose Level 3 FAW certificate is coming up for renewal. Completing the First Aid at Work Refresher course in Canary Wharf extends your qualification for a further three years.
Rather than repeating the full three-day programme, the refresher revisits the core workplace first aid content, updates your knowledge in line with current guidance, and gives you supervised time to practise the key skills you’re expected to use at work. This helps you stay aligned with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) expectations.
✅ You can attend if your FAW certificate is still valid, or if it has only recently expired within the usual grace window (typically up to 28 days).
Eligibility & When to Book
This two-day FAW renewal course is intended for learners who already hold a First Aid at Work certificate. To keep your qualification continuous, it’s best to book before the expiry date — otherwise you may have to complete the full three-day First Aid at Work course again.
Most providers apply a short grace period after expiry (commonly 28 days). If your certificate expired earlier than this, requalification isn’t available and the full FAW course will be required.
Please bring evidence of your current certificate (or one that has only recently expired) on day one, as this will be checked before training starts.
What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?
On the FAW Requalification in Canary Wharf, you will revisit the full First Aid at Work syllabus so your knowledge stays current and your qualification remains valid. Across two training days, you’ll practise the practical skills and decision-making expected of a workplace first aider.
- Responding to medical emergencies such as heart attack, stroke, asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, and similar conditions
- First aider role, responsibilities, and safe practice (including infection prevention)
- Assessing the situation: scene checks and primary casualty assessment
- Recognising and treating shock, burns, scalds, and common minor injuries
- CPR for adults and using an AED
- Recognising anaphylaxis and using auto-injectors
- Managing choking and major bleeding
- Recovery position and responding to seizures
- Head, spinal, chest, and other serious trauma scenarios
- Injuries to bones and joints, including fractures
- Eye injuries and suspected poisoning
Assessment & Certification
The First Aid at Work Refresher in Canary Wharf is evaluated through practical scenarios, ongoing trainer observation, and a short multiple-choice knowledge check. The aim is to confirm you can apply the skills confidently and correctly after revisiting the syllabus.
Once you successfully complete the course, you’ll be issued an updated Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate. It remains valid for three years and is recognised in line with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance.
Annual Refresher vs This 2-Day FAW Requalification
Annual refreshers and the FAW Requalification are often confused, but they serve different purposes. A yearly refresher is a short session to keep skills familiar and build confidence between renewals — it’s helpful, but it does not extend the certificate.
When your First Aid at Work qualification is due to expire, the two-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) is the course you need. This is the formal route to renew your certificate for a further three years.
Who Is the Course For?
This two-day FAW Refresher is for qualified first aiders who work in higher-risk or larger workplace settings — including warehouses, large offices, factories, and construction environments. It’s suited to anyone who needs to keep their First Aid at Work qualification current and meet ongoing HSE expectations.
