What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?
The First Aid at Work (FAW) Refresher — also known as the FAW Requalification — is a focused 2-day course for qualified first aiders whose certificate is approaching expiry. When you complete the First Aid at Work Refresher in Coatbridge, you renew your Level 3 FAW qualification for a further three years.
Because you’ve already completed the full programme, this refresher is designed to bring your knowledge up to date and give you supervised time to practise the core techniques you may not use every day. It also helps you stay aligned with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) expectations for workplace first aid cover.
✅ You can attend if your FAW certificate is still valid, or if it has only just expired and you are within the short grace window (usually up to 28 days).
Eligibility & When to Book
This 2-day requalification course is for learners who already hold a First Aid at Work certificate. To avoid having to start again, it’s best to book your refresher before your current FAW qualification runs out.
If your certificate has expired, you may still be able to renew within the 28-day grace period. Once you are beyond that, you’ll need to complete the full 3-day First Aid at Work course again.
Please bring evidence of your current or recently expired FAW certificate with you on day one, as proof of eligibility is required for requalification.
What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?
Across the two days in Coatbridge, you will revisit the full FAW syllabus to make sure your skills and decision-making remain sharp, and your certification stays valid. Training includes practical assessments and hands-on refreshers for the situations workplace first aiders most often encounter.
- Roles, responsibilities, and infection prevention for workplace first aiders
- Assessing the scene and carrying out a primary survey
- Adult CPR practice and using an AED safely
- Recovery position and responding to seizures
- Managing choking, catastrophic bleeding, and other urgent emergencies
- Recognising and treating shock, burns, scalds, and minor wounds
- Handling fractures and injuries to the head, spine, chest, and limbs
- Responding to eye injuries and suspected poisoning incidents
- Recognising anaphylaxis and using auto-injectors correctly
- Responding to common medical emergencies such as heart attack, stroke, asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, and other sudden illnesses
Assessment & Certification
The First Aid at Work Refresher in Coatbridge is assessed through practical skill demonstrations and ongoing trainer observation, followed by a short multiple-choice test. This approach checks that you can apply the techniques confidently and safely in real workplace situations.
Once you successfully complete the course, you’ll receive a renewed Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate. Your updated qualification is valid for a further three years and remains recognised in line with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance.
Annual Refresher vs This 2-Day FAW Requalification
Many first aiders hear “annual refresher” and assume it renews their certificate — but it doesn’t. An annual session is a short skills update that can help you stay confident during the year, especially if you rarely use first aid at work.
If your FAW certificate is due to expire, you’ll need the 2-day First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification). This is the course that formally renews your qualification and extends your certificate for another three years.
Who Is the Course For?
This 2-day FAW Refresher is for existing workplace first aiders who need to renew their certificate to remain compliant. It suits staff working in medium- to higher-risk settings where first aid cover is essential, such as warehouses, manufacturing, construction, logistics, facilities teams, and larger office environments.
