What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?

The First Aid at Work (FAW) Refresher, also called the FAW Requalification, is a 2-day course designed for those whose FAW certificate is nearing expiry. Completing this First Aid at Work Refresher Course in Northern Ireland allows you to renew your Level 3 FAW qualification for an additional three years.

Unlike the full three-day FAW course, this refresher is tailored to update your existing knowledge and give you hands-on practice with essential first aid skills under the guidance of a qualified assessor. The course ensures you remain fully compliant with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) standards while refreshing your competence in workplace first aid.

✅ This course is ideal for anyone whose FAW certificate is still valid or has recently expired within the allowable grace period, usually up to 28 days, giving you a seamless way to stay qualified.

Eligibility & When to Enrol

The 2-day First Aid at Work Refresher in Northern Ireland is specifically for learners who already hold a valid FAW certificate. To maintain continuity and avoid repeating the full three-day FAW course, it’s best to book your place before your current qualification expires.

There is a short 28-day grace period after your certificate expires. If your qualification has lapsed beyond this period, you will need to complete the full FAW course to regain certification.

On the first day of the refresher, please bring your current or recently expired FAW certificate as proof of eligibility.

What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?

By enrolling in the FAW Requalification course in Belfast, you’ll revisit the complete First Aid at Work syllabus, ensuring your skills remain up-to-date and your certification stays valid. Over the course of two days, you will practice vital first aid skills that every workplace first aider should master.

  • Understanding the role and responsibilities of a first aider, along with effective infection control
  • Assessing a scene and conducting a casualty survey
  • Adult CPR and AED application techniques
  • Safe positioning: Recovery position and managing seizures
  • Responding to choking emergencies and severe bleeding
  • Providing care for shock, burns, scalds, and treating minor injuries
  • Managing fractures, head, spinal, and chest injuries
  • First aid for eye injuries and suspected poisoning
  • Recognising and treating anaphylaxis using auto-injectors
  • Responding to medical emergencies like heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, and diabetes

Assessment & Certification

The FAW Refresher in Northern Ireland is evaluated through a combination of practical demonstrations, trainer observation, and a short multiple-choice quiz. This approach ensures you can confidently demonstrate the first aid skills you’ve refreshed throughout the course.

Upon successful completion, you will be awarded a renewed Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate, valid for three more years and fully recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Annual Refresher vs 2-Day FAW Requalification

Many people confuse the annual refresher with the full First Aid at Work Requalification. The annual refresher is a brief course designed to help you practise your skills once a year, but it does not extend the validity of your certificate.

To formally renew your First Aid at Work qualification for another three years, you must complete the 2-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) in Northern Ireland. This is the only course that updates and extends your Level 3 FAW certification.

Who Can Benefit from This Course?

The 2-day FAW Refresher in Northern Ireland is ideal for designated first aiders working in medium- to high-risk environments, including construction sites, manufacturing facilities, warehouses, and large office settings. It’s perfect for anyone looking to maintain an up-to-date qualification and stay fully compliant with HSE regulations.

On-Site First Aid at Work Refresher in Northern Ireland

If your organisation has multiple staff members needing to renew their FAW certification, arranging on-site training can be a convenient option. An accredited trainer can deliver the full 2-day requalification course at your workplace, enabling your team to refresh their skills together.

Benefits of on-site training include:

  • Flexible scheduling to suit your team
  • Tailored to the specific risks of your workplace
  • Cost-effective solution for larger groups
  • Training your team together in one session
  • Reduces travel and minimises time away from work

My experience at Ayotte Recruitment and Training Academy was first class. Three weeks ago, I attended the First Aid and Level 2 Door Supervisor SIA course, and my instructor Peter was very knowledgeable and thorough with his teaching. I learn a lot from him and his staff. Peter and his staff provided the group with some valuable insight into the security industry.
