What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?
The First Aid at Work Refresher, also known as the FAW Requalification, is a 2-day course designed for those whose FAW certificate is about to expire. By completing this refresher course in Banbury, you’ll extend your Level 3 FAW certification for another three years.
Unlike the full three-day programme, this refresher focuses on refreshing your skills and updating your knowledge. You'll also have the opportunity to practise essential first aid techniques under the guidance of an assessor. This course ensures you remain compliant with the latest Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requirements.
✅ You can take this refresher course if your FAW certificate is still valid or within a short grace period after expiration (typically up to 28 days).
Eligibility & When to Book
This 2-day First Aid at Work renewal course is available exclusively to learners who currently hold a valid FAW certificate. It’s recommended to book your spot before your certification expires to avoid the need to retake the full 3-day First Aid at Work course.
There is a 28-day grace period following the expiration of your certificate. If more than 28 days have passed since it expired, you will need to complete the full FAW course again.
When attending the course, please bring proof of your valid or recently expired FAW certificate with you on the first day of training.
What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?
By enrolling in the FAW Requalification course in Banbury, you’ll revisit the full First Aid at Work syllabus to ensure your knowledge is current and your certification stays valid. Over the two-day course, you will practise the essential first aid skills needed to handle various workplace emergencies effectively.
- Assessing the scene and performing casualty surveys
- First aid for choking, severe bleeding, and managing shock
- Adult CPR and how to use an AED effectively
- Managing fractures, head, spinal, and chest injuries
- Treating burns, scalds, and minor injuries
- Providing care for eye injuries and suspected poisoning
- Using the recovery position and managing seizures
- Recognising and responding to heart attacks, strokes, epilepsy, asthma, and diabetes
- Understanding first aider responsibilities and infection control procedures
- Recognising and treating anaphylaxis with auto-injectors
Assessment & Certification
The FAW Refresher course is assessed through a combination of practical demonstrations, direct trainer observation, and a brief multiple-choice test. This assessment approach ensures that you are confident in applying the skills you've refreshed during the course.
Upon successful completion, you will receive a renewed Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate, which is valid for three more years and fully recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Annual Refresher vs the 2-Day FAW Requalification
Many people confuse the annual refresher with the FAW Requalification course. The annual refresher is a brief session designed to help you practice your skills each year, but it does not renew your certification.
To officially renew your First Aid at Work certificate, you must complete the 2-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) course. This is the only course that extends your qualification for another three years, ensuring you remain fully compliant with health and safety regulations.
Who Is the Course For?
This 2-day FAW Refresher course is tailored for appointed first aiders working in medium- to high-risk environments who need to renew their qualification and stay compliant with HSE standards. It's perfect for professionals in industries such as construction, manufacturing, warehouses, large offices, and healthcare settings.
Whether you're responsible for overseeing first aid in a factory, managing a team on a construction site, or working in a high-traffic public space, this course ensures you remain prepared to handle medical emergencies effectively.
