What Is the First Aid at Work Refresher (Requalification)?
The First Aid at Work (FAW) Refresher, also known as the FAW Requalification course, is a 2-day training programme for individuals whose FAW certificate is approaching expiry. By completing the First Aid at Work Refresher Course in Gillingham, you can renew your Level 3 FAW qualification for a further three years.
Rather than repeating the full three-day First Aid at Work course, this refresher is designed to update your knowledge and refresh key practical skills through supervised practice with a qualified assessor. It also ensures continued compliance with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines.
✅ You can attend this course if you hold a valid FAW certificate or are within the short post-expiry grace period (usually up to 28 days).
Eligibility & When to Book
This 2-day First Aid at Work Refresher course is available only to learners who already hold an existing FAW qualification. To avoid the need to complete the full 3-day First Aid at Work course again, it’s strongly recommended that you book your refresher before your current certificate reaches its expiry date.
A grace period of up to 28 days applies once the certificate has expired. If your FAW qualification has been expired for longer than this, you will be required to enrol on the complete FAW course instead.
All learners attending the course in Gillingham must bring evidence of their valid or recently expired FAW certificate on the first day of training.
What Will You Refresh/Practise During the Course?
When you attend the FAW Requalification course in Gillingham, you will revisit the full First Aid at Work syllabus to ensure your knowledge remains current and your certification stays valid. Over two days of practical training, you’ll refresh the core first aid skills required in workplace emergencies.
- Roles and legal responsibilities of a workplace first aider, including infection prevention
- Assessing emergency situations through scene safety checks and casualty assessment
- Delivering adult CPR and safely using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- Managing unconscious casualties, including the recovery position and seizure response
- Responding to choking incidents and controlling life-threatening bleeding
- Providing treatment for shock, burns, scalds, and common minor injuries
- Identifying and managing fractures, as well as head, spinal, and chest injuries
- Administering first aid for eye injuries and suspected poisoning
- Recognising anaphylaxis and correctly using auto-injectors
- Responding appropriately to medical emergencies such as heart attack, stroke, asthma, epilepsy, and diabetes
Assessment & Certification
The First Aid at Work Refresher course in Gillingham is assessed using a combination of practical skill demonstrations, continuous trainer observation, and a short multiple-choice knowledge check. This ensures learners can confidently apply the first aid techniques refreshed during the training.
After successfully completing the course, you will receive a renewed Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate. The qualification is valid for a further three years and is fully recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Who Is the Course For?
This 2-day FAW Refresher course is intended for appointed workplace first aiders operating in medium- to high-risk environments. It is particularly suited to sectors such as construction, manufacturing, warehousing, and larger office settings where HSE compliance is essential.
Annual Refresher vs This 2-Day FAW Requalification
The annual first aid refresher is often confused with the First Aid at Work Requalification course. An annual refresher is a short session designed to help first aiders practise their skills on a yearly basis, but it does not renew or extend a FAW certificate.
If your qualification is approaching its expiry date, the 2-day FAW Refresher (Requalification) course is required. This is the only recognised course that renews your First Aid at Work certification for another three years.
