ECS Labourer Card Course Overview

The course is designed for learners who need the SPA Health & Safety Core Day training to support their ECS card application. This one-day Safety Pass Alliance course helps electrical labourers build essential knowledge of workplace safety, health and safety risk assessment, site hazards and safe working practices.

The training is suitable for learners applying for an ECS Labourer Card, renewing an existing card, or meeting key ECS card requirements for supervised electrical labouring work in the UK. It covers the core health, safety and environmental awareness needed to work more safely around tools, equipment, machinery and site activities.

ECS Labourer Card Application
The SPA Safety Passport can be used as part of the ECS Labourer Card application route. Please note that this course does not issue the ECS card directly. Learners must complete their ECS card application separately through the official ECS process.

What is an ECS Card?

An ECS card is a recognised skills and safety card for people working in the electrotechnical industry in the UK. It shows that the cardholder has met the relevant ECS card requirements for their role, including identity checks, occupational evidence and health and safety awareness.

For electrical labourers, the ECS Labourer Card confirms that the learner can support qualified electricians and other skilled workers under supervision. It is commonly required by employers, contractors and sites before allowing workers to carry out electrical labouring duties on site.

Who Should Take the Safety Pass Alliance Course?

The ECS card training is suitable for learners who need health and safety training to support their ECS Labourer Card application or renewal. It is especially useful for electrical labourers who need to show basic health, safety and environmental awareness before working on site.

This course is suitable for:

  • People applying for an ECS Labourer Card
  • Learners renewing an existing ECS Labourer Card
  • Electrical labourers working under supervision in the UK
  • New entrants starting work in the electrotechnical industry
  • Learners who need ECS card training as part of their application route
  • Employers booking training for electrical labourers or site-based support staff
  • Workers who need to understand site hazards, safe working practices and health and safety risk assessment

What’s Covered in the ECS Electrical Labourer Card Course?

This ECS Electrical Labourer Card course covers the key health, safety and environmental topics learners need to understand before working on site or supporting an ECS card application.

  • Safety responsibilities: Learn about the legal responsibilities of employers and workers, including how safety is managed and how enforcing bodies support workplace standards.
  • Safe working areas: Understand how to keep the workplace safe, including recognising hazards linked to working at height, asbestos and general site conditions.
  • Tools, equipment and machinery: Build awareness of safe working practices when using hand tools, powered tools, plant equipment and workplace transport.
  • Health risks: Learn how to recognise and control common health risks, including hazardous substances, manual handling, noise, vibration and work-related stress.
  • Site procedures: Understand why workplace procedures are important, including emergency arrangements, reporting processes and basic first aid awareness.
  • Environmental awareness: Learn how site activities can affect the environment, including waste management, pollution prevention and responding to unexpected environmental incidents.

By the end of the course, learners will have a stronger understanding of common site safety issues and how to respond to them correctly. Successful learners receive an SPA Health & Safety Passport, which can support an ECS Labourer Card application or renewal.

How to Get an ECS Card Through the Safety Pass Alliance Core H&S Course
To get an ECS card through the Safety Pass Alliance route, learners must complete the SPA Health & Safety Core Day course and receive their SPA Safety Passport. This can be used as supporting health and safety evidence when applying for or renewing an ECS Labourer Card. Learners must then submit their ECS card application separately through the official ECS process and provide any additional evidence required for their role.

How is the Training Delivered?

The Safety Pass Alliance (SPA) Core H&S course is delivered as a one-day live online course, making it easier for learners across the UK to complete their ECS card training without attending a classroom. The session is led by an experienced trainer and covers the core health, safety and environmental topics required for the SPA Health & Safety Core Day.

Learners attend the course remotely using a video meeting platform, such as Microsoft Teams. During the session, the trainer explains each topic clearly, guides learners through the course content and supports them in preparing for the assessment.

This is not a self-paced course. Learners must attend the full live session, participate in the training, and complete the required assessment to receive their SPA Safety Passport. This passport can then be used as supporting health and safety evidence for eligible ECS Labourer Card applications or renewals.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal qualification requirements to enrol on the SPA Health & Safety Core Day course. It is suitable for learners who are applying for an ECS Labourer Card, renewing their card, or need recognised ECS card training to support their application route.

Learners should have a basic understanding of English, as they will need to follow trainer instructions, take part in the live online session and complete the course assessment. Since the training is delivered online, learners will also need a stable internet connection, a laptop or computer, and access to the required video meeting platform.

For the ECS Labourer Card application, learners may also need to provide additional evidence separately, such as proof that they are working in or entering the electrotechnical industry.

Course Assessment

The SPA Health & Safety Core Day includes an assessment paper that learners complete as part of the course. The assessment checks that learners understand the core health, safety and environmental topics covered during the training. Learners must achieve the required pass mark to successfully complete the course.

Course Certification

After successfully completing the SPA Health & Safety Core Day training, learners receive an SPA Safety Passport. This confirms that they have completed the core health, safety and environmental awareness training delivered through the Safety Pass Alliance scheme.

The SPA Safety Passport is valid for three years, and refresher training is required to maintain the qualification.

ECS Labourer Card Application
Please note that this course does not issue the ECS card directly. Learners must apply for their ECS Labourer Card separately through the official ECS process and provide any additional evidence required for their role.
