CSCS Green Card - 1 Day Course

A CSCS Card is typically required to work on most construction sites in the UK today. The CSCS Green Labourer Card, issued under the Construction Skills Certification Scheme, grants access to entry-level labouring roles.

Since February 2025, the card is initially valid for two years, and it can be renewed for five years if you can show evidence of ongoing employment in a labouring role.

With a Green CSCS Labourer Card, you can work on a wide range of construction sites across the UK, including housing developments, commercial builds, civil engineering projects, and infrastructure works.

Labourers typically support tradespeople, move materials, prepare the site, and carry out general tasks like clean-up, basic groundwork, and unloading deliveries.

The CSCS Green Card course is the first and most important step towards applying for your CSCS Green Labourer Card.

🎓 A CSCS Green Card is for non-skilled workers in the construction industry. However, if you work in a skilled occupation, you must take a CSCS NVQ qualification.

How to Get Your CSCS Green Card

Getting a CSCS Green Card is a simple 3-step process:

Step 1 - Complete this one-day Health and Safety course. Choose the self-paced online option or attend in person.

Step 2 - Pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test (HS&E), commonly referred to as the CSCS Test or CITB Test.

Step 3 - After completing the Green CSCS Card course and the CITB HS&E Test, you can apply for the CSCS Green Card.

For a detailed breakdown of how to get your CSCS Card — including costs, eligibility, and a step-by-step guide — read our blog: CSCS Labourer Card: The Key to Starting Your Career in Construction.

If you're completing the CSCS Green Card course online, the training can be done on a mobile, laptop, or desktop. However, the final assessment must be taken on a laptop or desktop with a webcam, microphone, and a stable internet connection.

CSCS Green Card Jobs

Having a CSCS Green Card opens up opportunities for entry-level positions in the construction industry, such as:

  • General labourer
  • Site Operative
  • Construction Assistant
  • Groundworker’s Mate
  • Tradesperson’s Labourer
  • Material Handler

CITB Health & Safety Test Price

The price for the CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) exam is £22.50.

CSCS Green Card Cost

The cost of getting a CSCS Green Card depends on three factors: CSCS Green Card training course fee (starting from £89.99), CITB HS&E Operatives Test fee of £22.50, and CSCS Green Card application fee of £36. Considering this, the cost of getting a CSCS Green Card becomes £148.49.

How long is the CSCS Green Card valid for?

As of February 2025, the CSCS Green Labourer Card is valid for two years when first issued. If you're still working in a labouring role at the end of that period, you can renew the card for an additional five years by providing proof of employment.

How do I renew my Green CSCS Card?

At the end of the initial two-year period, you can renew your CSCS Green Labourer Card online through your CSCS account. The renewal fee is £36, and you're allowed to renew up to six months before or six months after your card expires.

If you're still working in a labouring role, you’ll need to provide proof of employment, such as a signed declaration form or an employer letter. If this is provided, your card will be renewed for five years. If not, you’ll receive another two-year card.

You won’t need to retake the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test, as the result from your initial test will remain valid for three years (for first-time applicants), allowing it to be used for renewal.

Who Needs the CSCS Green Card?

If you're new to construction, working as a labourer, or entering the industry in a general support role, the CSCS Green Card is the card you'll need. It proves to employers that you’ve completed the required training to work safely and professionally on-site.

The Green Card is the recognised route for those without a formal trade qualification but who need to demonstrate a basic understanding of health and safety in a construction environment.

What Can You Do After Getting Your CSCS Green Card?

After getting your CSCS Green Card and gaining site experience, you can work towards a Level 2 NVQ in a trade (e.g. bricklaying, plastering, painting & decorating), which qualifies you for the Blue Skilled Worker Card. From there, you can progress to supervisory roles (Gold Card) or site management (Black Card) by completing higher-level NVQs.

  • ✓ Individuals looking to work in the construction industry at entry-level positions
  • ✓ Individuals already working in the construction industry
  • ✓ Individuals who want to perform security guarding duties on site
