The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Formwork is a great fit for individuals with prior experience in assembling, installing, and dismantling formwork. This nationally recognised qualification significantly increases your job prospects, setting you apart from other candidates in the field. The diploma could be a worthwhile investment for your future if you intend to advance your career in the construction space.
The qualification entails an on-site assessment process designed to evaluate your ability to apply your learning and understanding in your workplace. Successfully completing the qualification, combined with holding a valid CITB Health and Safety certificate, can earn you a CSCS Blue Skilled Workers Card, which is a valuable asset within the UK construction sector.
The qualification offers you the flexibility to choose one of two specialised pathways: formwork carpenter or formwork erector and striker. Regardless of which pathway you select, both will require you to successfully complete five mandatory units. These units are structured to ensure that you have a thorough understanding of the necessary tools to safely and effectively identify and select appropriate formwork systems, interpret design specifications and plans, and manage the hazards associated with formwork fabrication.
This qualification offers two distinct pathways, allowing you to choose the one that best suits your interests and career goals:
Formwork Carpenter
Formwork erector and striker.
Both pathways will teach you essential safety practices and standard procedures for handling resources. Furthermore, this programme will equip you with practical skills in assembling and dismantling timber formwork. By learning these techniques, you'll be able to confidently tackle a range of projects and work effectively within a team. Whether you're constructing temporary structures or permanent foundations, these skills will prove invaluable throughout your career.
Before signing up for this qualification, it's important that you have some prior experience in formwork. This will come in handy when you're providing evidence of meeting the learning outcomes of your chosen pathway. Even if you're planning to take up a relevant role in the near future, you can still sign up for the qualification. Just have a chat with your assessor and create a plan that works for both of you.
You don't need any formal academic background to enrol on this qualification. As long as you can show that you've worked on formwork tasks and met the learning outcomes of the qualification, you're good to go. So don't worry if you don't have a fancy degree, as long as you have the relevant experience and knowledge, you can enrol and start learning.
This qualification is self-paced, which means that it's entirely up to you to gather the evidence needed to meet the assessment criteria. Typically, it takes around 6-8 weeks to complete the diploma, but you can work at your own pace. Moreover, you can aim to finish it sooner if you're feeling motivated and ready to pursue a career in formwork. Remember, the sooner you complete the requirements, the sooner you'll be on your way to achieving your goals.
This qualification is assessed practically at your workplace. You won't have to worry about any extra examination activities or taking time out of your work schedule to attend exams. Instead, a qualified assessor will be assigned to you. During the assessment process, the assessor will evaluate your performance based on a set of criteria to determine if you meet the learning outcomes of the qualification. This means that you'll need to demonstrate your understanding of the responsibilities of a formwork, as well as your ability to apply your knowledge and skills to perform tasks safely and effectively.
You will have to provide portfolio of evidence in one of the following forms to support your assessment:
Assignments/projects/reports
Worksheets
Portfolio of evidence
Record of oral and/or written questioning
Candidate test papers

Brilliant nvq course my assessor was Kehinde, and I honestly couldn’t have asked for better support. Everything was explained clearly and I felt supported every step.

This is a national vocational qualification that covers 5 mandatory units from either of the two pathways. You’ll learn important safety protocols for construction sites and get hands-on training in formwork.
To qualify for this certification, you'll need to successfully complete all five units from either of the two pathways. Once you've finished the programme, you'll be eligible to take the CITB Health and Safety test. If you already hold a health and safety certificate, you don’t need to take the test. However, it must have been issued within the last two years in order to meet CITB requirements.
Providing evidence in a timely manner is important to completing the qualification quickly, but keep in mind that it usually takes around 6-8 weeks to finish. The good news is that you can work at your own pace and submit evidence as you go. So you have the flexibility to move faster or slower depending on your schedule and other commitments.
