The CSCS Apprentice Card is one of the five types of CSCS Red Cards, designed for construction workers. It’s specifically aimed at individuals who are registered as an apprentice with a construction company. Remember, the CSCS Red Card is one of the six types of CSCS cards.
This card works as proof to an employer that you’re working towards a relevant qualification for your current job. The Apprentice CSCS Card is valid for 4 years and 6 months and cannot be renewed. To get this card, you must pass a CITB test within the last two years. You must also be currently enrolled in an apprenticeship.
Do I Need a CSCS Card for an Apprenticeship?

Requirement 1: Proof of enrollment in an apprenticeship scheme
The first requirement is to be enrolled in an accredited apprenticeship scheme. You must confirm to your employer that you’re associated with an apprenticeship scheme. You can confirm it in the following ways:
- Show your apprenticeship agreement to your employer.
- Provide a letter to your employer showing that you’re registered with your training provider in a specific qualification.
- Request a letter from the Managing Agency showing you’re registered on an apprenticeship scheme from the CSCS Approved Apprenticeship Standards list.
Requirement 2: Pass the CITB HS&E Test
The second requirement is to pass a CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test. CSCS also offers an exemption from this test if you have any of the below:
- Proof (letter or email) from your apprenticeship managing agency that assures you successfully meet their health and safety requirements.
- Submit a one-day CITB Health and Safety Awareness course certificate.
- If your induction or initial qualification includes a Health and Safety unit.
