CCTV Operator Training

Role of the CCTV Operator: This section introduces learners to the role and responsibilities of a CCTV operator. It covers aspects such as maintaining confidentiality, understanding codes of practice, and dealing with incidents appropriately.

CCTV Equipment and Operation: Participants learn about different types of CCTV equipment, how to operate them effectively, and how to maintain and troubleshoot these systems.

Surveillance Techniques: This part of the course focuses on teaching effective surveillance techniques. This includes monitoring and tracking individuals, recognizing suspicious behavior, and using zoom and focus effectively.

Recording and Data Management: Here, trainees learn how to record and store footage correctly, ensure data protection compliance, and handle requests for CCTV footage.

Legislation and Compliance: This module provides an understanding of the laws and regulations that apply to the use of CCTV, including the Human Rights Act, Data Protection Act, and Freedom of Information Act.

Emergency Procedures: This final section prepares participants to respond effectively to emergencies, including reporting incidents and liaising with emergency services.

Course Duration

The SIA CCTV Operator Course typically lasts about 3 days. It's designed to be intensive to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge in a short period.

Assessment

Written Examination: This part tests the theoretical knowledge gained during the course. It covers topics such as roles and responsibilities of a CCTV operator, laws and regulations, and data management.

Practical Assessment: In this part, participants are assessed on their ability to use CCTV equipment effectively, monitor live images, and respond to incidents. They are also tested on their understanding of emergency procedures.

Pre-requisites

• Age: Participants must be at least 18 years old, which is the legal minimum age to work in the private security industry in the UK.
• Identification: Participants must provide valid identification, such as a passport or driver’s license.
• Communication Skills: As the course is delivered in English, participants must have a good understanding of the English language, both written and spoken.
• Right to Work: Participants must have the right to work in the UK.
• Criminal Record: The SIA will carry out a criminality check on all applicants before issuing a license. While having a criminal record does not automatically disqualify you, certain offences may impact your eligibility.
